Stretch Your Brain

Research on neuroplasticity shows that when we use our brains, we actually create new connections and neural pathways! So solving problems is actually kind of like mental aerobics, building up your brain. There are lots of fun ways to work out your brain, of course, and once in a while it’s good to really do some stretching!

Try out these brain teasers (via BrainDen.com) to extend your brainpower.

Pouring water

If you had only a 5-liter bowl, a 3-liter bowl, and unlimited water, how would you measure exactly 4 liters of water?

Honestants and Swindlecants

There are two kinds of people on a mysterious island: The Honestants, who always speak the truth, and the Swindlecants, who always lie.

Three fellows (A, B and C) are having a quarrel at the market. A foreigner goes by and asks the A fellow: "Are you an Honestant or a Swindlecant?" The answer is incomprehensible so the foreigner asks B: "What did A say?" B answers: "A said that he is a Swindlecant." And to that says the fellow C: "Do not believe B, he is lying!"

Who are B and C?

Pouring Water
1) Fill the 3L bowl
2) Pour the 3L bowl into 5L bowl
3) Fill 3L bowl again. Use it to fill the 5L bowl that already has 3L in it. Only 2L can be used from the 3L bowl, so 1L will remain in the 3L bowl when done with this step.
4) Empty the 5L bowl
5) Pour the 1L that is in the 3L bowl into the 5L bowl. The 5L bowl now has 1L in it.
6) Fill the 3L bowl, again.
7) Pour the 3L bowl into the 5L bowl that already has 1L in it. You will then have 4L in the 5L bowl. DONE!

Honestants and Swindlecants
B is a Swindlecant
C is an Honestant

Rationale:
If A is a liar then he will lie and say that he is honest.
If A is honest he will say that he is honest.
So, under NO condition would A say that he is a liar.

So, B must have lied. If he lied, then he must be a Swindlecant because they ALWAYS lie.

C said that B is lying. We know that B lied, so C is telling the truth. If Honestants always tell the truth and Swindlecants always lie, then C must be an Honestant, because C told the truth.
